oceans never listen to us anyway.

admittedly, i was a little bummed when my flight left omaha in the snow. i like walking around all bundled up in a white void. i think you can see why i wasn't that upset for long, though...

catlong sighs holding kitty's black tooth

more pictures of ryan and julie's cats... i think one of the few things i like about monkey is taking snaps of her. lights are on, but no one's home.

and here is a rare appearance of penelope. she's portrayed in rare black and white:

do you know where i was at your age?

i went to nyc to watch a vikings game.
the other people at the bar were more interesting than the game.

throw roses in the rain...

went to nyc again this month for work... word was not so good, but i got to see a couple good exhibits, pick up some photos books, eat some wonderful sushi and spend time with ryan and julie. all in all, not shabby.

i'm not sure julie takes a bad picture.

ryan? usually good. heh. can someone link the shirts v. skins pic? ryan is resilient. had three teeth pulled about 30 hours before this snap.

it rained. rain beats snow.

hey little heroes, summer's long but i guess it ain't very sweet around here anymore.

there are huge snowdrifts outside my apartment today. thought it was a good day to put this snap up from warmer days.

apparently, to raise money for a bar, you can pre-open... basically serve booze before you open. you can get a permit for three days or something. also, if you don't have a kitchen, apparently you can just cook right there on the sidewalk. on one of the main streets in brooklyn. i gotta believe nyc would have a permit for that, too.

ain't no food upon the table, and no pork up in the pan.

my sister micki and her husband brad were nice enough to have everyone over for thanksgiving this year. i got to hang out with two of my favorite cousins (but not quite legitimate #1).

marcus likes beer. but not good beer. he's drinking keystone light in a glass. you stay classy. by the way, that is not a dining room table.

daniel found some pajamas he liked and wore them all day long. well, he wore them for a few hours until his mother said, "daniel, it's time to take those off. it's a more awkward now and less funny."

nothing is forgotten or forgiven, when it's your last time around.

can't remember the place, but some not-so-trendy bar in nyc that has been open a while. i do recall that i wanted to take his picture, and julie helped break the ice.

he visited this bar because he used to spend some time there years ago. he moved away, but came back to see the city.

in the window there's a face you know.

some of you (ryan) may remember this cat from a year ago when she tried to steal my money. she's a bit more shy now, but still is a cute cat.

tiptoe through our shiny city.

according to ryan, this picture "sums up our relationship." i'm not sure i know exactly what that means. i have a few ideas, but i'm open to yours. ryan is my best friend, but i will say this- julie is one of the most patient people i have met (among other qualities).

whoa. hundred posts.

i ain't here on business, baby.

those of you that have paid attention to the print edition, or are unfortunate enough to have to listen to me gripe, well, you know that this has been a rough fall for me. at least as far as action pictures go.

on friday i finally had a good game.

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

it ain't no use calling out my name, gal.

boy, i've had a rough string of luck for football pictures this year (at least for GOOD action pictures). things peaked this last weekend (i hope), and i was shut out of the paper. when i looked at another paper sunday morning, it appeared that someone else had a tough day, too.

they can't even sing to their shadows.

a snap from the bodega near ryan and julie's place. they're pretty nice guys. decent beer selection, too.

my mind's gone loose inside its shell

what would i do without wings night and these guys?
i'd pry just drink alone.

smoke 'em if you got 'em.

the college world series is finally over. espn added a minute to the commercial breaks this year and teams played very deliberately- many games were around four hours or longer. if you're interested, a lot of our cws slideshows are on the omaha.com site.

i wanna go gator around the warm beds of beginners.

got up "early" on a saturday morning a few weeks ago to talk to a photo club at the zoo. a good bunch of people there... after i finished running my mouth, a few of us ran around the zoo for an hour. i actually took a few photos since i rarely get the zoo assignments for the paper. butterflies and gators.

my s**t is bananas.

the downside? it's really hot and i have been spending nearly all my waking hours at rosenblatt stadium for the college world series.

the upside? gin & tonics and fresh fruit. mmm...

what the duck

one of my favorite daily reads, what the duck, seemed really funny today, so i thought i'd share.

maybe even you non-photogs would enjoy it.

you better start swimming...

a few snaps from the trip mush and i took to the sculpture garden at the walker in minneapolis. nice day...

he's got "the cancer."

but hopefully not for long...
as long as he manages to not eat sodium or iodine for three weeks and the radiation does its job, my cousin mike should be back to "normal" soon.

but he'll still have a heckuva scar.

when old man winter comes to town.

to complete the brookings winter experience, we got stuck in a snow ditch (but were able to push out) on our way to a small-town bar that we used to go to when we were kids. these bruce locals let me take their picture while they were drinking coffee. in hindsight, i should have maybe worked the situation a bit, but we had steak to eat and beers to drink.

the rural alberta advantage

uff da.
i nearly forgot i had one of these things. i suck.
back before christmas, two of my favorite people decided to leave the big apple and visit family back in south dakota, so i braved the cold and buzzed up there.

ryan and julie picked the coldest-ever weather to visit. my breath froze to my beard instantly. the wind was constant, as were the four-foot high drifts every morning in front of his dad's house.

still, it was a good trip. i don't get to see them very often, and i don't go up to brookings much.

good times.

if i should fall behind.

so i was cleaning up my desktop yesterday and found some pics i took around the holidays... so now i can have a few updates. we'll start with a couple cute photos of my friend's kids. well, lucy the beagle is not really a kid, but she is still lays on mike like a baby.

you can't start a fire without a spark.

spent some time with a a convenience store last night. the poor reporter had to spend the whole night there, which coincided with the first seven hours of his birthday. his present from me was a lottery ticket. keep your fingers crossed that his luck improves.

of course, none of this has anything to do with this photo, except that the lighters were sold at the store.

don't get caught on the wrong side of that line.

just got back from the gator bowl. there were lots of guys like this clown on the sidelines. what a dumbass...

for those keeping score at home...
1. knee pads when you don't kneel
2. monopod for a tiny lens
3. assistant when you use two camera bodies
4. hat AND sunglasses
5. boat shoes

a good man is hard to find.

my co-worker rudy smith retired a few days ago. he is a great guy and has taken some fantastic pictures over the years. we had a story about him in the paper. he has seen some crazy things over the years.

also, check out some of his pictures.
